A diet that includes all food groups to fulfill the required amount of nutrients necessary to promote good health is considered to be a healthy diet. There are 7 major nutrients we must acquire from food;
- Carbohydrates: The main two groups of carbohydrate are starch and sugar. Sugar is not an essential item for our healthy diet.
- Fats: Main two types of fats are saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Here saturated fats should be avoided while unsaturated fats should be included in our daily diet.
- Fiber: Fiber is a must item and should be included in our daily diet in order to keep our bowel system healthy.
- Protein: Protein is associated with growth, healing and repair of human body hence it should be acquired from our diet.
- Salt: Salt should be taken as it is a source of iodine but in controlled quantities.
- Vitamins: Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Vitamin E are essential for good health and must be acquired from our daily diet.
- Minerals: Our body need more of calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and phosphorus and small amount of iron, zinc, iodine, fluoride and selenium for overall well being of our health and brain functioning.
The nutrients mentioned above can be acquired by eating required portions of food from the five major food groups regularly.
