Keep Yourself Fit Even with a Deskbound Job

Life has become easy and smooth with the advancement of technology. You need not sweat to death to earn huge money. You just need as little physical activity as clicking the mouse and patience to sit on your chair, at least 8-9 hours a day. Physical labor is less necessary and with a sedentary job, turning overweight is just a matter of time. Do you know Australian researchers have found that men working on the desks more than six hours a day are twice as likely to be overweight than those who sit for less than 45 minutes a day. But you cannot help it as you are earning your bread and butter out of this job.

Deskbound jobs have contributed significantly to the increasing obesity rate in the past 20 years. According to another study conducted by the University of Chicago in 2001, a worker in a deskbound career may end up with Body Mass Index 3.3 units higher than someone in a physically active job. Deskbound job is a chief health concern leading to obesity for both men and women.

There is always a silver lining in the cloud. You can love your deskbound job and be fit at the same time. Here's how you can do that;

  1. Eat Properly : In between reading e-mails, meetings, computer related works, do not forget to eat your meal. Remember to eat healthy and tasty meal along with 2 healthy snacks every day. You can try microwave meals that are low in calorie and sodium while in the office.

  2. Get Physical : Compensate for your deskbound job. Join a gym or allow yourself a walk every morning. Buy home exercise equipment and jump on it whenever you have time…if not then use it at least in the weekends.

  3. Team Work : Plan a team activity that does not revolve around food or alcohol. Go for a bi-weekly volleyball, a weekend trekking or have fun while playing table tennis. You can make it a point to play a quick round of mini-golf with your team after work. These activities will also keep your team fit and in shape, you will enjoy seeing the uproar of team spirit.

  4. Avoid eating due to monotony : Keep a bottle of water and a glass. Water is a boon to your health and while drinking water you can divert your mind for a while and at the same time keep your system clean. It will also sidetrack your mind from food when you are not really hungry.

  5. Overlook Technology : Grab the chances when you can actually get up from your chair and move. Get up and deliver those mails, memos and faxes in person, prefer a stability ball at your desk so that you can improve your posture, use a toilet which is on the other floor. Chat face-to-face instead of emails or phones. If you have to attend many phone calls then buy a cordless phone and move around while talking. Park at distance or at the end of the parking lot for a brisk walk to your office building daily. The slight changes in your lifestyle can quickly pick your energy level up and help you remain fit.

  6. Learn to eat wisely : If you are going out for lunch or eating in cafeteria, make sure that you know what to choose for your meal. Eating wisely will boost up your energy level and help you remain fit. When you do not find healthy choices in your cafeteria or workplace, check with the person who's in charge of food service and advise the person about how to balance food to get healthy as well as tasty options.

Take care of yourself while you are in office and see the effects in other parts of your life. Minor changes in lifestyle can bring in dramatic changes in your energy level and body fitness. All it requires is a little conscious effort and a few minutes of your time.
