A latest report makes it apparent that around 45 percent mothers in New Zealand who delivered babies that died just within the first couple of weeks after being born and 49 percent of mothers delivering dead babies are found to be either suffering from obesity or overweight. Along with these statistics, the report also reveals that obesity is getting more associated with unfortunate pregnancy results.Cindy Farquhar, the chairwoman of the report committee and also an obstetrics professor of Auckland University, states that improved statistics are required to evaluate if obesity is related to the death of babies occurring at or around the period of birth.
According to Helen Paterson, a lecturer who works with Dunedin School of Medicine and specializes in children’s and women’s health, the statistics made available by the New Zealand-based study are inadequate and further study is required to find out the association between obesity and perinatal death. However, she adds that the rising obesity in New Zealand is capable of enhancing the risk of mortality and morbidity of the pregnant mother as well as her baby.
Further Cindy Farquhar, the report committee chairwoman reveals that more comprehensive information on pregnant women is needed as the national statistics on pregnant women is not available and obesity is capable of causing all types of pregnancy related problems.
